Purina Bella Dog Food Reviews | Gourmet Options for Small Breeds

Smaller breeds like Yorkies are adorable. They also tend to be a lot more demanding. They’re not just going to eat anything you put in front of them. Ask me – I was pet-sitting for a friend with two of them.

Tempting them to eat when they were missing my friend was difficult. You’re also concerned for them – they have such small tummies and appetites that every scrap of food needs to count.

Fortunately, Purina has tackled this problem headlong. Their Bella range is designed especially for smaller dogs. In these Purina Bella dog food reviews, we’ll have a look at how these foods measured up.

Our Top Pick

I handed over the taste testing portion to my three experts – Pickle, Peanut, and Archie, and the overwhelming winner was the Bella Purina small dog food six flavor bundle.

Purina Bella Natural Bites for Small Dogs – Chicken and Beef

This product is nutrient-dense and specifically designed for smaller dogs. They need more energy to take the bigger doggies on, after all.

Key Features

  • Natural formulation enriched with vitamins and minerals
  • Contains a good proportion of real chicken and beef
  • Antioxidants included for immune health
  • Lifelong nutritional support for your dog
  • No artificial colorants, preservatives, or flavors

What I Like About This Product

Now, Pickle isn’t a small girl. She’s a miniature schnauzer, so she’s a bit larger than your typical teacup breed. That said, she’s game for anything, and she wolfed this food down fast. She loved this food.

Our old man, Archie, did too. He’s getting on a bit, so it’s not so easy to crunch down anymore. The smaller size of these chunks really appealed to him.

What I like about this brand is that you get a blend of chunks and little tender bits. The tender bits are yummy for your dog. The kibble helps slow them down a bit and cleans their teeth.

The slightly sweet taste of the sweet potato adds an extra dimension to tempt fussy eaters.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

My little monsters gobbled this food up fast. I do wonder what would happen with really fussy eaters, though. Would they ignore the kibble and just eat the tender bits?

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Good nutrient balance
  • 26 percent protein
  • 15.5 percent fat

Cons

  • Easy for fussy dogs to sort out the nicer bits

It’s good food. It’s the perfect size for a smaller dog.

Overall Rating

3.5 out of 5 All the scrumptious goodness your dog loves and needs.

What I Like About This Product

There’s nothing worse than buying a pack of dog food only to find that your little fusspot won’t eat it. What I like here is that you get six flavors in one package. Now, even the pickiest eater should find something to love there.

The flavors sound quite tempting, even to me. You’ve got:

  • Grilled chicken
  • Beef
  • Turkey
  • Porterhouse steak
  • Filet mignon
  • Chicken and smoked bacon

I also feel that the price is very affordable.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

If you’ve got a little pooch who needs to lose weight, it could be problematic. They’re going to scoff up this food in next to no time.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Good nutrient balance
  • Soft texture makes it easy to chew
  • Nice range of flavors

Cons

  • Easy to eat
  • Doesn’t come in bigger tins

Most pooches are going to go nuts over this food. I’m human, and I wouldn’t mind eating porterhouse or chicken and smoked bacon every night. This bundle offers a range of choices and great value for money.

4 out of 5 A lip-smacking success.

Purina Bella Small Breed Pate Wet Dog Food; Filet Mignon

If your pooch needs to be tempted to eat, it doesn’t get much tastier. This pack of twenty-four comes with a mixture of the porterhouse and filet mignon flavors.

Key Features

  • Individually packed servings for a small dog
  • Enriched with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
  • Soft pate for older dogs
  • Balanced meals for smaller dogs

What I Like About This Product

Some dogs can be stubborn. They only eat what they like. Unfortunately, they’ll leave food on their plate if it isn’t up to scratch. What I like here is the food is tender and that the gravy looks rich. Mix it in with the kibble to entice your pooch to eat more.

The packs themselves are easy to store and won’t take up too much space in your kitchen cabinets.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

It comes in individual serving sizes. If you have a tiny dog, like a Yorkie, these are perfect. If your dog is bigger, like a Maltese, you’ll need more than one packet per meal.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Good nutrient balance
  • Great texture
  • Gravy is thick

Cons

  • The portion is not big enough for a larger small breed

Overall, you’ll score lots of loving cuddles if you treat your dog to this pack. With twenty-four per pack, you won’t run out soon.

4 out of 5 Perfect for a pampered pooch

Purina Bella Savory Soups

When your pooch is feeling a bit under the weather, they won’t want to eat a lot. This range of savory soups features tasty morsels in a nutrient-rich broth. Choose from three different flavors for your pet.

Key Features

  • Individually packed servings for a small dog
  • Enriched with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
  • Broth-based meal for dogs
  • Balanced meals for smaller dogs

What I Like About This Product

I do like that this is a broth-based product. I battle to get Pickle to drink as much water as she should. With this product, I mixed in half a cup of water before serving. I don’t think she noticed the difference, and the plate was licked clean.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

These are smaller, serving sizes overall. The Bella range of tinned food comes in 3.5-ounce cans. These come in at less than half of that. If you have a Yorkie, that’s perfect. For a Maltese, one pack won’t be enough.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Good nutrient balance
  • Broth-based
  • Real meat pieces
  • No artificial preservatives, flavors, or colorants
  • Great portion sizes for teacup breeds

Cons

  • You’ll need a few of these for larger small breeds

My dogs were licking their lips big time after trying this food out. Now, granted, my dogs are not very fussy eaters. That said, this soup should tempt most dogs – even if they’re picky.

3.5 out of 5 Your pooch will love this soup de jour.

Purina Bella Natural Bites for Small Dogs – Chicken and Turkey

If your pooch needs to lose a little weight, this is going to be the better option. Chicken and turkey are both lean proteins.

Key Features

  • Natural formulation enriched with vitamins and minerals
  • Contains a good proportion of real turkey and chicken
  • Antioxidants included for immune health
  • Lifelong nutritional support for your dog
  • No artificial colorants, preservatives, or flavors

What I Like About This Product

Now you can sneak in veggies without your pooch knowing. This flavor combination includes green beans and carrots. Not the most exciting, perhaps, but good solid nutrition.

I think the combination of the crunchy bits and softer pieces is a good match for an older doggie.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

I think most dogs would love the taste. The only issue I have is that the different chunks make it easy for dogs to sort out the best bits. They might then leave the rest.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Good nutrient balance
  • 26 percent protein
  • 15.5 percent fat

Cons

  • Easy for fussy dogs to sort out the nicer bits

If you have a small dog, you’ll like this brand. The chunks are small, and the dogs will find them tasty. It’s an affordable alternative to some of the premium brands.

3.5 out of 5 Grab a bag and be a Rockstar in your dog’s eyes.

About the Brand

For the better part of a century, Purina has been creating quality pet food. It’s a well-known and well-loved brand. It’s made a name for itself by producing innovative formulations using good ingredients.

The company was initially started in 1894. Back then it supplied food for farm animals, but over the years, it began to change its focus. Today Purina is a global leader in the pet food industry.

They produce a range of different products under different names—Alpo and Dentalife, for example.

Purina has always adopted the approach of providing optimal nutrition for pets. Bella is just one of their specialized lines. Unlike many other premium brands, you can find affordable ranges too.

They also offer an innovative, customizable range. This is more expensive, naturally. The advantage is that the pet owner and the company work together to create a custom food program.

Over the years, this is just one of the innovations that the company has come up with. They’re also known for improving their formulations for better flavor and nutrition.

The company insists that employees be passionate about pets. This is a company that looks out for pets. They proved that in 2016 when they voluntarily recalled some of their Pro range. This was because the vitamin levels in some of these products were lower than usual.

Overall, Purina has established itself as a trustworthy brand. Whatever your budget, you’ll find a range to suit you.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to dog food, doing upfront research is essential. There are a lot of dog foods on the market that have little to no nutritional value. Unfortunately, the health of your fur baby is not as important to everyone.

Purina has shown that they’re different. They’re a reputable brand with a proud history. My panel of judges gives the Bella range a four out of five yaps. They love the taste and consistency.
